The Knife Built for a Hunter’s Wife
— A one-off creation sparked by a car park conversation
Sometimes the best orders don’t come through a website, they come straight up to you in the Bunnings car park.
That’s where I was parked when a man spotted the branding on my van and came over for a yarn. He asked if I made knives — not as small talk, but because he had a specific job in mind.
He wanted a knife made to his specs — something his wife could use for butchering deer. Functional. Comfortable. No fluff.
We talked about what it needed to do: a blade that held its edge, a handle suited to smaller hands, and a shape that would make the work easier, not harder. That was all I needed to hear.
I went away and designed a knife just for her. I showed him the different handle options, and he chose one that I hadn’t anticipated but was perfect for her. The result was a one-off skinner crafted from 1084 high carbon steel, with a custom-shaped handle in blue and yellow acrylic — bold, distinctive, and easy to spot if dropped in the bush.
So I made it and really enjoyed the whole process. It’s the kind of tool you don’t baby — you use it. That’s the point.
Why This Knife Matters
This wasn’t just about steel and resin. It was about listening to someone’s real-world needs and building something from the ground up. That’s the beauty of handmade knives — no two are ever truly the same, because no two stories are either.
And in this case, the story didn’t end with the knife…
"Mate, absolutely stoked with the knife — it’s bloody awesome. It meant a hell of a lot to both of us having it handmade, and the way it turned out was more than we could’ve hoped for. Bit of a laugh, but when I asked the missus to marry me, I was already down on one knee cutting a stag’s head off — not too far from where we shot the one in the photos. Two years on, we’ve got this beautiful knife and a bunch of memories to go with it. Can’t thank you enough.
That’s what this is all about — real tools for real people, built with meaning and made to last.
